How to Clean Gold Jewellery

imagesThe maintenance of your golden jewels is not a complicated ordeal with too many scientific considerations to be applicable by ordinary people. However, it does require some simple knowledge that you will find in this article.

Golden jewels do not darken like their silver relatives, but they can still get dirty, which will make them lose their shine and may even lead to skin irritations. It is important to keep them clean and shiny. Fortunately, golden jewelry care is extremely easy and cheap. Before we begin with the cleaning, however, we need to take a look as to how and what makes them dirty.

Most often this is due to a residue of decorative and cleansing cosmetics and human secretion of sweat, body fats and dead cells, which cover the gold and make it lose its shine.

There are different procedures for cleaning golden jewels and which one of them you will pick depends on whether your jewel is set with gems or not.

The easiest way to clean golden jewels with no precious stones (such as chains, rings or bracelets) is to dip them for 15 minutes in a bowl of warm water mixed with a few drops of soap or a mild dish-washing liquid, then rinse them and let them air-dry on a soft towel. Despite its simplicity this method is very efficient against the standard pollutants of gold. The soap solution can reach and dissolve them even in difficult places, like between the links of a chain or the fastener, which are usually hard to reach.

Cleaning golden jewelry with gems is not so simple. Submerging them in water can be contraindicative, because it can corrode the bed of the gems and loosen their setting. This procedure is not as simple, but it is still very easy. Make the soapy solution described above, but instead of dipping the jewel itself in the water use a soft towel to wipe it clean. Use a towel soaked in clean water to rinse it and set it on yet another towel to drip-dry. If you are using dish-washing liquid for these procedures keep in mind that it must not contain abrasive elements or corrosives, because they will harm your golden jewels.

Often golden ornaments are richly inlayed or have complicated intricate curves, which are not readily cleaned by a rub with soapy water. For their cleaning you will need to use a very soft toothbrush. Dip the toothbrush in the solution and lightly rub in a circular motion. This will get rid of the stubborn dirt in hard-to-reach places. Afterwards rinse the jewel with clean water and let it air-dry.

It is important to remember that you must never put your golden jewels away before they are completely dry, because this will leave stains on their surface. Those stains are easily removable, but pose an unnecessary complication to the cleaning process, which, as you can see, is quite easy. All it takes is just a little effort and even your old golden jewels will regain the shine of their youth so that you can truly enjoy them.
