Many people react to acne with harsh products, and it’s the completely wrong approach as the skin often gets worse. But what do you do? Amie Skincare may just be the answer. Bursting with natural plant and botanical extracts and free from harsh chemicals, Amie products are gentle yet super-effective which is great news for sensitive skin. The products are also free from nasties such as parabens, sulphates, mineral oils, petrochemicals, animal extracts and are vegetarian and vegan friendly.
Hafsa Issa-Salwe speaks to Fiona Parkhouse, the founder of Amie.
What are the main causes of acne?
At puberty, and in response to the increase of hormones, our sebaceous (or oil) glands on our skin start to produce oil. These glands lie beneath the surface of the skin but are connected to it by small canals called follicles. Inside these follicles, oil carries dead skin cells to the surface of the skin. This oil (or sebum) can build up in the follicle and clog up the gland, causing a pimple to grow. Bacteria in the follicles known as ‘P.acnes’ thrives on oil and can multiply where there is lots of oil being produced by the sebaceous glands. It is this bacteria which can cause a blackhead to grow and become a red or inflamed spot.
With all this oil being produced, it’s important to begin a gentle cleansing routine in order to keep skin as clear and blemish-free as possible.
Cleansing the skin removes surface oil so try and clean your skin twice a day, morning and evening to remove the day’s grime and any make-up. A facial wash specifically designed for oily skin such as, Amie’s Morning Clear Purifying Facial Wash (£4.95) or Radiant Dawn Exfoliating Daily Wash (£4.95) is most effective, if used regularly.
The number of women with adult acne is increasing, why do you think that is?
I am not sure exactly but adult acne is probably also caused by the hormonal changes that can affect women throughout our lives (menopause being another time when many women suddenly start to break out again). There is also a school of thought that pollution and high humidity can aggravate oily skin and acne too.
What can we do to treat acne?
The best way to keep on top of acne is to keep your skin as clean as possible without using harsh products that will irritate or aggravate your skin.
It’s important to keep skin clean and balanced, removing any surface oil, make-up and the day’s grime.
Use a gentle cleanser such as Amie’s Morning Clear Purifying Facial Wash (£4.95) or Radiant Dawn Exfoliating Daily Wash (£4.95). Both contain natural sebum-regulators and anti-bacterials to help control oil and reduce the appearance of blemishes. Importantly, both are also pH-balanced which means they have the same pH as normal skin. Also, they don’t contain soaps which are alkaline and so have the effect of disrupting the skin’s surface barrier which results in that taut, dry stripped feeling.
What acne fighting ingredients should we look out for in our products? Which should we run far away from?
Natural, non-irritating ingredients are important in skincare for skin that is acne-prone as skin is still sensitive and easily irritated while prone to breakouts.
It’s also probably more a case of what to avoid ! Soaps and soap-based cleansers can be drying, as can products containing alcohol.
Tell us about Amie, how do your products help against acne?
I developed the Amie range to provide an effective, natural solution for oily and acne-prone skin that really works. I decided to ditch all the traditionally-used harsh and aggressive chemicals, such as sulphates, petrochemicals, alcohol and mineral-oils that I felt had no place in a modern skincare range designed for young skin.
Instead I created effective products with a very high level of naturally-derived ingredients – 95% being the average – designed to work in complete harmony with young skin. I also avoided using any parabens, animal extracts or any ingredients of genetically modified origin. What’s more, Amie is ‘teen’ not animal tested !
Amie products are also wonderfully pampering and enjoyable to use with delicious natural fragrances that are uplifting. Because of this, lots and lots of young women love using Amie and have got into a good skincare regime. They are using their Amie products regularly which is the very best way to look after your skin and to keep it clear and problem-free.
