Women who wear the hijab seem to be categorised in one of two distinct groups; the extremist or the new young ‘hipster hijabi’. This is not a name we have coined but was in fact the name of the very programme on subject given by the BBC. This leaves no room for the ‘middle ground’ which in fact is likely a majority of Muslim woman, as it rightly should be.
Fortunately, there are some initiatives in development to tackle this. One of them is Quantico, a new American ABC series featuring a hijabi FBI agent.
Yasmine Al Masri, a Palestinian actress, plays the role of the charismatic Nimah Anwar. The new recruit and her fellow agents are being prepared to be real FBI members in Quantico, VA, at the headquarters of the Bureau. You may have recognized Yasmine Al Masri from Caramel, a Lebanese movie by Nadine Labaki, produced in 2007. Al Masri was born in Lebanon, has a Palestinian father and an Egyptian mother. She graduated from Paris fine arts during her twenties.
Released on September 27th, the series feature a number of ethnicities and is a refreshing sight (despite that the good old theme of terrorism is ever present).
